1. DC Metro Trip

This will be a great opportunity for students to learn how to use the CUE bus and Metro train systems and make a short trip into DC.

Dates: Friday, August 26
Time: 12pm
Fee: Students will buy their own Metro train card. Bring cash for snacks.
Registration: Registration Form

We will meet in the early afternoon and travel to downtown Washington DC by public transportation. Students have the option of meeting the group on campus or at the Vienna Metro Station. Students will be responsible for paying their own bus and train fares. Once in the downtown DC, we will walk by the White House (iconic home of the US President), and then students will have free time to walk to nearby museum (most of which have FREE entrance). Depending on the weather, students will have the opportunity to reconvene after 5:00pm for a free outdoor jazz concert near the National Gallery of Art. Students are welcome to bring a small blanket with them for sitting on the grass and to purchase food at nearby restaurants or food vendors (or to bring food with them from home).

Students will be responsible for all expenses of this trip. Also, although we will travel together to Washington DC, students will be responsible for navigating their way home, either by public transportation, taxi, Uber, or other methods.  We are happy to provide guidance if needed.

Summary Itinerary:
- Leave campus, travel to Vienna Metro Station by bus
- Travel by Metro train to downtown Washington DC
- Take photos of the White House (from outside the gates; not a White House tour)
- Free time (approximately 2 hours) to explore museums or downtown area in small groups
- Outdoor jazz concert

Note: This trip will be led by two OIPS staff members.  Students are free to leave the group at any time.

Specific times and details will be provided closer to the date to those who register below.

2. Mason Firsts Ice Cream Social & International Paint Night

Join us for an Ice Cream Social at the Fairfax Campus

Date: Thursday, September 8
Time: 4:30pm-7:30pm

The goal of this event is to connect first-generation college and international students with faculty and staff across campus who work in roles that support first-generation and international students. Students will have an opportunity to meet peers and faculty/staff from similar backgrounds, and hopefully forge some long-lasting connections. We will serve ice cream, provide information about essential campus resources and organizations, and buttons for attendees to wear throughout the year. During the second half of the event, attendees can mix and mingle while creating paintings and pictures.
